Our beliefs, whether they are conscious or unconscious, have a profound impact on nearly every aspect of our lives. Whether we have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset very much affects our behavior and the decisions that we make in life, as well as our relationship with success and failure in both professional and personal contexts. Cultivating a growth mindset can be one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself if you want to be more resilient and take continued action to achieve whatever it is you most deeply desire in life.Read More
Coffee isn't the only way to start the day if you are Bulletproof! In fact, some days, a perfect cup of hot chocolate might be what you need to rev yourself up and be ready to live your day to the fullest - I know it often is for me! Chocolate gets me feeling zing-y, hopped up on theobromine (related to coffee, but not a nervous system stimulant), bliss-inducing anandamides and PEA, which is a chemical that your brain produces when you're in love. It makes me feel GOOD! Sitting down with a giant mug of chocolate-y perfection has me feel like I'm winning already even though the day hasn't really started yet. Pair the cacao with a subtle hint of peppermint upgrades the morning to perfection, in my humble opinion, so I've added that to the recipe below, but feel free to leave it out.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you're following the BP protocol of eating an anti-inflammatory, mold-free diet, you want to be extra conscious about where your cacao powder comes from and get the highest quality stuff. Bulletproof brand is always top-notch, of course.
A morning that starts with this delicious drink is bound to be a good one. Enjoy!

Bulletproof Peppermint Hot Chocolate
- 1-1.5 tablespoons best quality butter from grass-fed/pastured cows
- 1-3 teaspoons of Brain Octane Oil (start off slow if you're new to this, it can take a little time to build up bowel tolerance)
- 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder
- 2 or more drops Doterra Peppermint Oil
- non-glycemic sweetener to taste, I like my favorite stevia drops or a tiny bit of monkfruit powder, or a mix of the two
- Optional: 2-3 Tablespoons hydrolyzed gelatin powder (This form of gelatin is virtually tasteless and an easily-assimilable protein source that is useful to support adrenal health as well as stable blood sugar levels. It's good for skin, hair, nails, joints, as well as gut health. This protein can also be a helpful addition to your morning drink to keep your hormones in balance, especially if you're a woman over 40 like me. It is best to not blend collagen at a very high speed, so tweak and blend your drink till it tastes great to you, then add the collagen in last and blend it in briefly on low speed.
Blend all ingredients 30 seconds or more on high until frothy and smooth. Stop the blender and tweak the sweetness to your liking if necessary, and add gelatin if using. Then blend just briefly on low to incorporate again, pour and enjoy your morning.
If you have a hard time sleeping, listen up! Sleep is SOOOO important, and learning to get a proper night's sleep is a skill many of us need to learn these days. I'm going to admit right now that I've had issues with my sleep that are deep-rooted and go back over 15 years, and of course have been actively been working on it because I know how integral good rest is to overall health and resilience.
Over the years have tried what feels like EVERYTHING - every herb, potion, healer, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, etc etc ETC — but still often struggle. The last few years, it became apparent that the two major physiological issues affecting me, imbalanced hormones and erratic blood sugar, were finally no longer an issue (thank you, Bulletproof Diet!) but I still couldn't sleep through the night.
A few months ago, I left a relationship that had been causing me anxiety and nighttime ruminating. It wasn't healthy for me. After the breakup, I noticed that when I woke up in the middle of the night as per usual, my mind was finally clear and content, but due to my longstanding habit of not being able to fall back asleep in the middle of the night - for whatever reason - I still often could not get back to sleep, despite the anxiety no longer being an issue. I was glad that around this time, I stumbled upon what feels to me like the most effective, easiest sleep hack of all time.
Apple Cider Vinegar + Honey Sleep Potion
This magical potion was introduced to me by the infamous Tim Ferriss, who says in his videos that he doesn't even know the mechanism by which it works. It's simply 1 Tablespoon of raw HONEY and 2 Tablespoons APPLE CIDER VINEGAR in a cup of warm water at bedtime. Try it! It tastes good, and I swear it is akin to a narcotic for me. I use it almost every night now. (I do use a little less than a full tablespoon of honey.)
A little honey can be a good source for extra glycogen which can be used up by the liver while we sleep, and the ACV supports the gut microbiome, as well as helps regulate insulin production so perhaps keeps blood sugar from plummeting while you rest - but beyond that understanding, I am not sure quite how this works. Apparently it works for 8 out of 10 people, so if you try it, let me know if it works for you. Happy Zzzz's to you! It's such a gift to be well rested!

When I look back at pictures of me when I was younger, I am always surprised how clear and healthy my skin looks, even back in my twenties when I was unbelievably insecure about it.
My skin looked so good in pictures because I put painstaking care into covering it up with lots of makeup.
Like all other young girls, I craved the even skin tone and healthy glow that I saw in the magazines and media all around me, and I was under the impression that you needed makeup and beauty care products sourced both from the local drugstore and the fancy counters at department stores to get it. I guess since I wasn't all that healthy, I did need that stuff, because the glow certainly wasn't coming from the inside! Everyday, after my shower, I would use maybe 3 or 4 products aimed at preventing breakouts, and then I would apply foundation, concealer, pressed powder, bronzing powder, and finally some rosy blush. I had so much practice that I was skilled at making it look natural, and I doubt anyone even realized I was wearing makeup. I looked pretty good, rosy and pretty, but what a burden it was to me, and I couldn't skip a single day, feeling too insecure to leave the house without doing the routine in entirety every damn day.
Fast forward to today, and I have that same glow without a stitch of makeup, and I receive comments and compliments routinely complimenting my even skin tone and the unusual radiant glow I emanate. I credit this glow to a few factors:
- Not consuming any highly refined sugars at all
- Low consumption of unrefined sugars as well
- My nutrient-dense, Bulletproof-inspired diet
- Long term usage of a variety of fermented foods leading to a well nourished gut microbiome
- Responsible sun exposure
- Being well rested by getting good "beauty sleep" most nights (still working on this one!)
- My simple yet highly effective skin care routine
The details of my skin care routine are what I'll be sharing here, as when I shifted away from using any chemicals at all on my skin about 4 years ago, the condition of my skin started improving right away and has continued to do so as the years have gone by. I am so thrilled to be liberated from the draining routine of "hiding" my skin blemishes on a daily basis. It is wonderfully freeing to know that even free of any makeup, I have clear, even, glowing skin to show to the world!
My Skin Care Routine
There are really only two products that I need to share with you here, the first being Living Libations Best Skin Ever. The second being the life-changing clay mask by Alitura. If you spend ANY money at all on your skin, I highly recommend forgoing your usual investments and throwing down for these two products to begin with. I guarantee that you will see the difference!
Best Skin Ever: What it is + How to Use It
Using anything formulated by Nadine at Living Libations is a divine treat! I started using some of her magical potions years ago, when I decided to ditch the toxic, hormone-disrupting stuff procured from the drugstore and department stores once and for all, and I couldn't be more that I found this brilliant company! I have been endlessly inspired by their brilliant formulations of essential oils and pure unrefined plant oils that they ethically source from all over the world.
If I had to suggest just one product for you to start your own journey towards a more natural way of taking care of your skin, my choice would hands down be the 110 ml bottle of the Sea Buckthorn Best Skin Ever. This is going to be the best bang for your buck, but feel free to get a pricier version like the Rose or Sandalwood instead if you prefer.
Nadine bills The Best Skin Ever as "an all-in-one cleanser, exfoliator, and moisturizer." Having this product on hand allows you to not only stop using your moisturizer, but your cleanser as well. Really, no cleanser?! I was skeptical too, but when I started oil cleansing in a manner similar to what she recommends, I had incredible results. Instead of stripping your skin like most cleansers out there, the reasoning behind this is that the beneficial omegas, antioxidants, fatty acids, vitamins, lipids, and hundreds of bioactive compounds in the oil blend restore and nourish your skin, penetrating, healing, clarifying, and regenerating. Yep, in my experience it does all these things. (And check out the Amazon reviews here, I'm not the only one.)
Here's what Nadine writes about it herself:
Created with harmonious, organic oils perfect to bring into balance every skin type, Seabuckthorn Best Skin Ever™ is brimming with nourishing bioactive botanical compounds. Skin cells sing under the care of Seabuckthorn and all her attentive tissue-attendants, including golden jojoba, virgin coconut, tamanu, lavender, vetiver, grapefruit, and pure palmarosa. Seabuckthorn berry supercritical extract sinks deep into the lipid layer of the skin, infusing tired tissues with antioxidants, omegas, fatty acids, and phyto-protective properties. Our golden jojoba melts into endless moisture, working with coconut and lavender to soothe, balance, and protect. Brilliant berries of tamanu inspires the growth of fresh skin cells, while rich roots of vetiver balances sebum production at every level of the stratum corneum. Grapefruit tightens and tones as the phytochemicals in palmarosa nourish and adore each skin pore.
To learn how to cleanse your face/skin with this product, feel free to click over here and learn from Nadine's instructions and videos. Personally, I take a slightly different approach, preferring to use warm water and rinse it off. Here's my own quick tutorial:
In the shower, rinse your face for a couple minutes with warm/hot water. If you're not showering, but are at your sink, warm your skin for a couple minutes using a washcloth soaked in warm/hot water. Squeeze out your washcloth till it's damp and apply a couple squirts of the oil to a corner of the cloth. Use this area to rub gently in small circles all over your face and neck till you have covered every inch. Next, use warm water to rinse the face, rubbing again gently with the damp cloth. Your skin should feel clean but not squeaky. Rinse and squeeze out your cloth, and that's it.
After you "cleanse," you can massage another squirt or two onto your damp face and neck afterwards. I do, for added moisture and nourishment. Personally, I do this cleansing routine every other day or so when I do my full shower routine including hair washing etc. I find that washing every single day is actually unnecessary. I do, however, use a few squirts of the oil as a moisturizer every day. Try it out and see what works for you and your skin. Ditching the toxic products that disrupt the health of your skin is something you ought to consider, and using The Best Skin Ever instead will likely guarantee a beautiful healing journey for your skin!
The Clay Mask by Alitura
On my quest to find healthy, radiant, blemish-free skin without depending on harsh chemicals, I found another product that I cannot live without. Well, I suppose I could, but I wouldn't look as good!
The first time I mixed up the Alitura Clay Mask and used it, I was in a hotel room, and even under the horrid fluorescent lighting, after I rinsed the mask off, my skin was radiating in a way I had never seen before. The improvement was almost shocking, definitely better than any fancy facial I'd ever endured! I swear that my pores practically disappeared and the tone of my skin was more even, all in less than 15 minutes. And I had only used a tiny fraction of the big jar of product! WIN!
Here's what Alitura's website says about it:
"Unlike ANYTHING else on the market, the Alitura Clay Mask is truly an “all-in-one” facial treatment that thoroughly purifies skin at its deepest layers. This unique blend of 9 nutrient-dense ingredients exfoliates dead skin, reduces pore openings, stimulates blood flow, and encourages growth of new skin cells. The detoxifying properties of carefully formulated clays draw out impurities, and produce porcelain-smooth skin with a radiant glow. There is no other clay mask like it!"
Here's what's in it:
10% L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Freshwater Pearl Powder, 6-hour Grass-fed Colostrum, American Ginseng, American Ginseng, Rhassoul Clay, Illite, Calcium Bentonite Clay (Green Desert Clay), Kaolin Clay, Organic Kelp Powder
As with all things, I read this list and figured I might recreate the mix of powders myself for a lower cost, but no way! The components of the mix are hard to come by in the proper form, and the synergizing effects of them in this mask are one hundred percent worth every penny! The formula is evening, moisturizing, detoxifying, smoothing, calming, healing, and improves just about every aspect of your precious skin. If you decide to use it with apple cider vinegar to hydrate the clay mixture, effects will be even more pronounced than if you simply rehydrate it with water.
I cannot recommend getting a jar of this more. Use it 1-3 times a week and you will no doubt see major improvements in your skin quality and clarity in no time at all.
So, that's it! Invest in these two products both for less than the cost of a fancy facial, and set yourself up for major change. It's worth the time, energy, and effort, I promise! I wish I had known how to caretake my skin for such gorgeous results much earlier in life. Now that I do, I am happy to teach others how to get glowing skin too!
Sometimes brewing coffee in the morning is just too much work and you want a quicker option. Or perhaps you're into the Bulletproof lifestyle, but just aren't a coffee lover? I personally adore coffee but fall into the former category: I'm just too lazy in the morning to commit to grinding, etc, in order to brew a proper cup. Whichever category you fall into, I've never seen a really good chai latté disappoint anyone, and this recipe will make it delightfully easy and quick to get this Bulletproof-style morning chai into your belly in a jiffy.
I've been known to simmer and brew spices and steep the tea, but in the mornings nowadays, I prefer to keep it quick and use a ready-to-go chai mix instead. The one I use is really amazing and made by a conscious company based in Oregon called Blue Lotus Chai. I love the blend of warming, blood-cleansing digestive spices in all the varieties I have tried, and I enjoy adding a bit of fresh ginger when I blend it up as well — try that if you are a ginger lover for sure!
This version of a chai latté is incredibly potent, delicious, and creamy. You'll be feeling supercharged with vital energy, not drained and kind of sick like you would after a sugar-laden version from your local coffee shop. Plus, like any BP drink in the morning, it will likelykeep you satiated till lunchtime. What a great morning ritual!
Best Ever Bulletproof Chai
- three little scoops of any chai powder mix by Blue Lotus Chai, or to taste
- 1 small nub of fresh juicy ginger, optional
- 1-2 tablespoons grass-fed butter or ghee
- Brain Octane oil (1/2 teaspoon-1 tablespoon depending on gut tolerance)
- Sweet Leaf Whole Leaf Stevia Concentrate or monkfruit powder to taste
- two cups (16 ounces) of very hot water
Blend all ingredients for a full minute, pour, and enjoy
*If you need extra adrenal support, are prone to the jitters from any caffeine (but are choosing to consume it anyways), or are working to maintain stable blood sugar levels, try adding a 2-3 tablespoons of gelatin powder for added protein.
Note: Blue Lotus Chai powder comes in Traditional Masala, Roiboos Masala (caffeine-free), Mint, Star Anise, and more, so take your pick! They are so convenient and absolutely yummy.

To me, this is CHOCOLATE PUDDING PERFECTION. It works as a fantastic high-fat snack or as an appropriate ending to a lighter meal. It's dense and nutritious and if you use stevia or monkfruit powder to sweeten it, it is very low carb.
The best part about it is that it takes about two minutes to blend it all together, and it's ready to eat right away. (You do need to have the avocado chunks frozen beforehand though.)
This recipe also couldn't be easier as it has only one step: blend. Two if you count adjusting the sweetness. Like most of my other recipes that use alternative sweeteners, you can mix and match sweeteners like I prefer doing, and adjust the amounts you use to your own liking.
Almost Instant Chocolate Pudding
- 1/2 medium avocado, frozen (cut into smaller chunks before freezing)
- half a can of full-fat coconut milk
- small handful of cashews
- drizzle of Brain Octane oil or spoonful of coconut oil
- large heaping spoonful of cacao powder (2-3 tablespoons)
- a large pinch or two of vanilla powder
- pinch or two of sea salt
- 1/2-1 teaspoon maca (gelatinized is best)
- 1 tablespoon mesquite powder, optional
- raw honey, prebiotic yacon syrup, stevia, or monk fruit sweetener to taste - or a combination
- 2-3 ice cubes, made of water or leftover coffee
In a high speed blender, put all ingredients, and blend at high speed, adding just enough water to get the blades to engage (1/4-1/2 cup) and using the tamper to push the sides down and get everything amalgamated. Watch the pudding turn fluffy and delightful. Add in a few ice cubes if you desire the pudding to be cold. Blend till everything is incorporated, then adjust the sweeteners to your likening, adding more if necessary. Serve in a bowl topped with cacao nibs, bee pollen, or anything you like!
Perfection! Now go enjoy!
A SHASTA DAY
Last night I sat under the half moon and hundreds of stars on Mount Shasta, listening to the orchestra of nighttime animal sounds and reveling in the majesty of the magical, mystical sky above this sacred mountain. I slept soundly in my cozy van.
Today I woke up early, made a satisfying Bulletproof chai latte, did some meditation and yoga under a giant cedar tree, and went to meet up with some friends. We had a picnic and a glorious swim in Castle Lake, then I took off alone and scampered up to Heart Lake, which I find to be the most lovely of all the spots I've been to in this area. The views are wondrous and the sweet breeze up there seems always to be blowing warm. Right now, because of the record snowfalls last winter, so much plant life has exploded and I spent the day reveling and appreciating the diverse array of plants and so many flowers! I nibbled on edible plants and medicinal herbs all day long. It felt like pure magic to be up there!
I took the long way up and down because I couldn't ever find the main trail, but I never felt lost and the natural landmarks guided my way. I was wearing my superminimal barefoot sandals, and I savored every step, feeling the rocks and earth under my feet and not hesitating to tromp through every flow of water I encountered. I ate sparingly, just enough, and drank lots of water. Then I drove over the Stewart Mineral Springs and soaked in the dense hot mineral water in a private tub, sweated in the wood fired sauna, and did repeated plunges in the very icy creek.
Now I'm back on the mountain, under the same moon, my body, mind, and spirit all renewed and feeling strong and joyous. It was a perfect day in nature and my heart is full of gratitude for the healing of my soul that transpired.
Remember the days when low-fat was revered? I remember being a kid in the Eighties when we were buying out the local grocery store stock of Snackwells cardboard-dry, no fat, high carb cookies because it was big news that fat was The Enemy. Ugh. The media news reports instructed to eat as little fat as possible, and exercise more along with this low- to no-fat diet as a surefire recipe to stay slim and trim. Subsequently, we all watched as obesity levels skyrocketed and the health of this country declined. Hmmmm.
Well, things have changed radically since then, and hopefully we all know by now what was true all along: that eating more healthy fats — not less — can be one of the best thing you can do for your body, especially in light of the fact that most of us avoided fat for so long. It’s actually easier to lose weight and prevent degenerative conditions like heart disease, cancer, dementia and type two diabetes, not to mention obesity, when we have adequate fat intake. Plus we feel better, have less cravings and have steadier energy. Maybe this still sounds totally nuts to you, but the latest research clearly shows that it's sugars and carbs that are actually at the root of heart disease and obesity, not fat, and that a higher fat diet actually can speed up metabolism, reduce hunger, and make it easy for you to lose extra pounds by stimulating fat burning. Really? Yep!
My own transition to eating a higher fat diet and becoming fat-adapted has been life-transforming for me, mostly because it changed my relationship to food and hunger in a way that I never imagined.
Here are some of the benefits I've experienced from transitioning my diet to higher fat:
1. Being able to go for up to six hours between meals with no snacks without getting angry, hangry, or just too hungry to function.
2. Not getting insanely ravenous or feeling like I can’t go on unless I Get. Food. Right. Now. (I know you know that feeling, we all do!)
3. Any cravings for carbs subsided completely. Yes, seriously.
4. Mood swings due to blood sugar imbalances were completely eradicated and I have a sustained even energy, a happier mood, and a greater ability to focus.
Eating LOTS of healthy fats and a relatively low-carbohydrate diet now, not only have I balanced my formerly erratic blood sugar, but my body has a metabolic flexibility that I never even knew existed before. This is a fantastic benefit. It means that even when I do eat a load of carbs now, it’s easier for my body to switch back to into fat-burning afterwards and maintain the even energy that I now value so highly.
It’s actually pretty simple to get fat-adapted. You just start eating more good fats, like coconut oil, butter, ghee, avocados, and meat and eggs from best-quality, organic, pastured, non-grain-fed animals. Mind you, eating more fat while also eating lots of carbs won’t give you the same benefits, so also reducing your intake of refined sugars and grains when you do this is key to your success. You can still have starchy roots and tubers, like root veggies and sweet potatoes, and small amounts of fruits, just don’t make them your main focus. Focusing on lots of fat, moderate amounts of high-quality protein, and a large amount (ten fistfuls per day is ideal!) of a wide variety of non-starchy green vegetables (always eaten in conjunction with lots of fats) will keep you satiated as well as help keep your gut bacteria healthy and provide a variety of important polyphenols, phytonutrients and minerals.
One of the things that helped me personally transition to a higher fat diet was to change the way I started my days. A breakfast that is full of carbs and sugars typically sets us up for sugar crashing all day long. Transitioning to a low or no-carb meal with a good portion of fat and some protein in the morning is great, but I found something even better: for almost two years now, I have consumed a morning elixir in place of breakfast. Mind you, I am a formerly food-obsessed professional chef, so this was a HUGE change for me! But I have no intention of stopping anytime soon — the focus, alertness, satiety, cognitive performance and energy that these drinks give me is just too awesome! Plus, sipping on this nourishing drink in the morning is a beloved ritual that I look forward to each day. Having a drink like this instead of breakfast in the morning is also an effective way to begin to transition to a diet that includes a lot more fat — up to 50 to 60% of your daily calories can be from healthy fats, about 20% from protein, and the remaining 20 to 30% from lots of vegetables and some other good sources of carbohydrates.
In addition, I have a trick that makes a higher fat diet easier and my morning even better. It’s called Brain Octane oil, and I love it so much that I hope every foreseeable morning of mine starts with some! Brain Octane is made from coconut oil, but includes only one type of MCT (C8 caprylic acid medium chain triglyceride) rather than the assortment found in coconut oil. You’d have to eat 18 times as much coconut oil to get the same amount of C8 that is in the same amount of Brain Octane. Seriously, this stuff works like magic.
What exactly does Brain Octane do? Well, simply put, when you include this in your diet, it rapidly metabolizes into ketones that can be used by the brain for instant energy without your body having to break down glucose from dietary sugars or carbohydrates which it preferentially uses as fuel. Our body can make its own ketones, but only when it's using fat exclusively as fuel (a state called ketosis). This can be accomplished by sticking to what is called a ketogenic diet, but a purely ketogenic diet usually has little to no carb consumption for days on end (tho typically does include carb “refeeds"). I eat some carbs everyday so clearly my goal is not to be in ketosis full-time.
But I love that Brain Octane provides my body with exogenous ketones even though I am not in ketosis, because if you have ketones present in your body, you will experience a host of benefits, including reduced oxidative damage in the body, increased production of glutathione which is our body’s master antioxidant, a revved up metabolism, and increased mitochondrial biogenesis — all of which can give you amazing brain power, leaving you feeling clearer, sharper, generally cognitively faster, and even euphoric! When your brain runs on ketones it’s also A LOT easier to fight cravings, and calorie restriction happens naturally because you’re just not as hungry. If you give the following recipe a try, you’ll probably find out just what I mean!
Note: For the first 6 weeks, your pancreas might need to learn how to make more lipase, the enzyme that digests fat, especially if you were eating a low fat diet before. So if you’re getting nauseous from your Bulletproof-style drink, back off from the amount of butter and Brain Octane oil until you don’t feel nauseous. At the same time, take Betaine HCL capsules and a digestive enzyme that contains lipase, which will support your body’s ability to make stomach acid to emulsify the fat, as well as support you body’s ability to make lipase to digest the fat.
(PS: I have no qualms recommending some of my favorite products to you below via my affiliate links, which generate pennies really, but are fun to use ;)
Bulletproof – style Magical Morning Elixir
In a blender, put:
- 8-12 ounces of hot liquid: highest-quality organic freshly-brewed coffee (decaf or regular), brewed tea of any sort (chai, matcha, yerba maté)
- Bulletproof Brain Octane — start slowly with start slowly with 1 teaspoon and work up to 1-2 tablespoons over a period of a few days to a few weeks. (Back off if you have digestive distress, as it can take a little while to build bowel tolerance to that much.)
- 1 tablespoon (or more) of pastured, grass-fed butter or ghee
- sweetener like stevia or monkfruit to taste
Blend for 20-30 seconds until it is frothy and foamy like a good latté.
Optionally, you can finish by blending in 2-3 Tablespoons hydrolyzed gelatin powder. Gelatin is virtually tasteless and an easily-assimilable protein source to support your adrenal health and keep your hormones in balance. I recommend adding it most every day, for a while, especially if you're a woman over 40 like me. It is best not to blend collagen at a very high speed as it denatures the proteins in it, so tweak and blend your drink until it tastes great to you, and then add the collagen in last and blend the drink again briefly on low speed.
